HISTORY

After emigrating from Glasgow, Scotland around 1880, David V. Carruth established his insurance company in 1900. Becoming a prominent businessman in Clinton, it is no surprise that he was one of the members of the Clinton Industries Corporation. This group of prominent Clintonians saved the town of Clinton when the mills closed during the great depression.

David's daughter Dorothy W. Carruth took over the business when David passed away in 1941. She ran the operation until 1982. In 1964, David's grandson John W. Child started working with the company. Joined later by David's great grandson John W. Child, Jr. in 1985.

The David V. Carruth Insurance Company began at 109 High Street in the Globe Theatre Building (currently the Clinton Savings Bank parking lot). The offices remained on High Street until the building was closed around 1970, at which time they moved to Woodruff Plaza.

One of the stars of the operation was Susan E. Sullivan. She worked with the company from 1928 until her retirement in 1977. She ran the office for almost 50 years and worked with David Carruth, Dorothy Carruth and John Child.
